What is WBC?

The full form of WBC is World Baseball Classic. It is an international base-ball tournament. It is contested by man national teams and members of the World Baseball Softball Confederation.

Major League Baseball (MLB) is the administrator of WBC and its players’ association under the auspices of the World Baseball Softball Confederation (WBSC), the sport’s official global governing body for international competition.

It formerly cohabited with Olympic base-ball and the Baseball World Cup as an International Baseball Federation (IBAF) sanctioned tournament. In addition, the World Baseball Classic usually takes place every four years. 

The first WBC was held in 2006, and the winner was Japan. The second WBC was held in 2009, and Japan won again. Finally, the third WBC took place in 2013; the winner was the Dominican Republic.

So, WBC is one of the most famous baseball tournaments.

History of Baseball

The Baseball game has existed since the American Civil War.  The first known base-ball team started in 1845. Still, the sport grew in popularity in the late 19th century. By then, base-ball was widely recognized as the national sport of the United States.

This sport was first mentioned as “baseball” in the early 1800s, and “rounders” in 1828 may be the same or similar. Organized amateur club baseball grew in the cities of the eastern United States in the 1830s and 1840s, and rule innovations made by New York City clubs became the basis of the modern game, far removed from its English ancestors.

The USA developed this game. However, 3 different variations of the game existed at the time. Another notable piece of history came in 1947 when Jackie Robinson became the first African American to play in the MLB.

Baseball Rules

Baseball is a sport that started in 1744 and is a popular game in North America, Canada, and Japan. So, the format of the game has been developing. Here are some essential rules of Baseball:

• The game is played with 2 teams of 2 players each.
• The game’s objective is to score more runs than the opposing team.
• Each team takes turns at bat and in the field, with an inning consisting of each team having a turn at bat and in the field.
• When a pitcher throws the ball to the batter, who attempts to hit the ball into play.
• Suppose the batter hits the ball into fair territory. In that case, he attempts to run to first base, and any other baserunners on the base attempt to advance to the next base.
• A batter is out if he strikes out (three strikes), hits a ball that a fielder catches before it touches the ground (a fly ball), or hits a ball that is fielded by a fielder who touches first base before the batter gets there (a groundout).
• A baserunner can put out by being tagged with the ball while not touching a base or by a fielder holding the ball while touching the ground the baserunner is running to before the baserunner gets there.
• A run earns a score when a baserunner touches home plate before the third out of the inning is made.
• If a batter hits the ball over the outfield fence, it is a home run, and the batter and any baserunners on base score one run each.
• Many other rules govern things like base stealing, bunting, and substitutions, as well as rules regarding the size and dimensions of the playing field and equipment used.

How to Play Baseball?

The rules can seem confusing and complicated for those new to the game. But when you understand how to set up the field, play offense, and play defense; you can join a baseball team.

So, here I’m telling you how you can play baseball:

Step1: Team Up

Collect 9 players in your team, as each team should have 9 players. Though it is possible to play with fewer people, but you need to extend the coverage of every player on the field. Although it can be difficult for players to reach the ball after hitting it, get as close to the nine as possible.

Step 2:  Assign the Pitcher and Catcher

It would be best if you had a pitcher and a catcher. So the pitcher stands in the middle of the field and throws the ball to the batter. And if the batter doesn’t hit, the catcher will sit directly behind the batter at home plate to catch the ball.

Step 3: Infielders and Outfielders

Players in the infield (or diamond) protect the bases. There should be one player at first, second, and third base, which will be called the “basement.”

The 3 players in the outfield are the right, center, and left. They are responsible for catching fly balls in the outfield and chasing down ground balls that make it past the infield.

Step 4: Set up the Field

A baseball field consists of four bases arranged in a diamond shape, with a pitcher’s mound in the center. The distance between 2 bases is 90 feet, and between the pitcher’s mound and home plate is 60 feet, 6 inches.

Step 5: Determine the Batting Order

Each team will take turns batting, with the order determined before the game begins.

Step 6: Start the Game

The home team will take the field first, with the visiting team batting first. Then, the pitcher will stand on the mound and throw the ball to the batter, who will attempt to hit the ball into play.

Step 7: Field the Ball

If the batter hits the ball properly, the fielders will attempt to catch it or field it and throw it to a teammate to record an out.

Step 8: Score Runs

The game aims to score runs by having baserunners touch all four bases and return to home plate before the ball is caught or fielded by the opposing team.

Step 9: Switch Sides

After three outs, the teams switch sides, with the team on defense taking their turn at bat and vice versa.

Step 10: Continue Playing

Play continues for nine innings, with the most runs at the end of the game declared the winner.

Baseball Position and Roles

Baseball cannot progress without the essential designations of base-ball positions and their respective roles among team members. Therefore, getting a spot on the team requires learning baseball positions, roles, and other lineups.

There are 9 positions. They are listed below:

Catcher

A catcher exists to support the pitcher. He’s bound to admit that he’s forever the wind under the pitcher’s wings, taking all their pitches to keep the defense up.

His position is behind home plate, and he echoes the entire picture in front of him to the pitcher in the form of hand signals, showing the best movement and direction of the pitch.

First Baseman

A first baseman must have a tall body, a solid left-handed throw, and certain flexibility to receive, pick, or scoop throws from other infielders, usually extra-low.

Second Baseman

Third Baseman

Pitcher

Right Fielder

The right fielder (RF) takes over the responsibilities of an outfielder by holding events around the right side of the outfield.

Left Fielder

Center Fielder

Shortstop

Baseball Scoring Process

The scoring process in a base-ball game involves keeping a record of every play during the game. The scorekeeper’s job is to keep track of each player’s stats, as well as the overall score of the game.

The scorekeeper will use a scorecard to keep track of the game. The scorecard is a grid that represents the field, with spaces for each player’s name and position and a column for each inning of the game. The scorekeeper will also use symbols and abbreviations to record each play during the game.

To score a game, the scorekeeper will need to keep track of the following information for each play:

• The batter: The scorekeeper will record the batter’s name and number, as well as the result of their at-bat (e.g. a single, a double, a strikeout, etc.).
• The pitcher: The scorekeeper will record the pitcher’s name and number and the result of each pitch they throw.
• The fielders: The scorekeeper will record the name and position of each fielder involved in the play and their role (e.g., a groundout to the second baseman).
• The base runners: The scorekeeper will record the name and number of each base runner, as well as their movements during the play (e.g. a stolen base, a caught stealing, etc.).

The scorekeeper will use a variety of symbols and abbreviations to record each play on the scorecard. For example, a “K” might indicate a strikeout, while an “E” might indicate an error by a fielder.

At the end of each inning, the scorekeeper will add up the number of runs scored by each team and record the total score for the game. The scorekeeper will also update each player’s stats, including their batting average, on-base percentage, and fielding percentage.

Hitting

These skills can be improved with practice but are also determined by natural ability. Hitting requires watching the ball while swinging before passing the home plate and choking their bat position with the dominant hand over the non-dominant hand.

Hitting for Power

The fundamentals of hitting are combined with extra speed and speed. Players often step forward with their non-dominant feet to speed up their swing.
